What Just Happened?

Hi guys! I had a really fun post planned for today, but the universe had other plans. The polar vortex got in one final punch and decided to burst a pipe last night, leaving our basement flooded with water. Thankfully we heard the water gushing and caught it early this morning when it was only 1-2 inches high. It could have been so much worse. We've spent the entire day with plumbers and on the phone with insurance adjusters. The carpeting is being ripped out as I type by two men who must be professional body builders on the side because I have no idea how they're able to lift these water-logged rolls of carpeting.
Thanks to many years of sailing, John is an expert bailer. He bailed over 100 gallons this morning!

There are lots of really great things about being a homeowner. But when things go wrong, you're the landlord, which is absolutely terrifying! We're still very new to this and a little exhausted/scared by the whole concept. We pretty much recreated this scene today, looking down the basement stairs:

But we're tying to stay positive! We've both always disliked the carpeting in the basement, but never had the motivation to do anything about it. Now we're down to the concrete subfloor, so we have to pick out an alternative. Stay tuned! I will of course document the transformation, and I promise you, this will be a pretty awesome before and after, considering that this is now the before:

Have a great weekend!
