Happy 2014!

Hi! I hope you've had a tremendous holiday and that you're looking at the year ahead full of hope and excitement. I'm sitting in front of our Christmas tree right now (which I wish never had to come down!) and reflecting a bit on 2013. Last year was a year of great risk and greater rewards. I've dreamed about a career as a creative my entire life and it's finally happened. I'm sort of still in a state of shock over it! There's no possible way that this would have happened without the encouragement of my friends and family, and most especially my husband, John. He put a lot of trust in me to make this leap. "Hey sweetheart, I'm going to quit my job on Monday and go work in field I haven't really even gone to school for. That cool? K, thanks." Really though, it didn't happen quite so quickly, and John endured months upon months of listening to me gripe on about how unfulfilled I felt career-wise. He has some major life changes coming up in 2014 himself and I hope I can be half as patient, open-minded, and enthusiastic for him as he was for me.

One of my promises to John for 2014 is to try camping. We gave it a little test run today with a hike on the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls, MD. This gem is only about 15 miles from our house. The hike was a success and I think I'll be ready for an overnight camping trip once the temperature warms a bit. Christine and cold do not mix. I thought for a second that I had the winter camping thing all figured out but unfortunately John says that "glamping" doesn't count, so my first time camping will indeed be in a tent, and not in this sweet yurt that I found in the Shenandoah.

Here are some photos from our lovely new years day hike today:

A little late, but I also want to share some photos with you from our Christmas! We spent Christmas Eve in Pennsylvania with my mom, dad, brother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and came back to DC on Christmas day and celebrated with our family here. Both days were so low-key, and so much fun!

My sister-in-law's family has a Christmas cookie tradition so I made some honey whiskey balls and snowflake sugar cookies to contribute to her incredible cookie table on Christmas day. She is a very talented interior designer which I think you can tell just from how this table is styled!

Last but not least, I want to take this opportunity to thank YOU for reading this blog! To be honest, it is really scary for me to press publish on these posts, but the kind words I've received from so many of you have made it much less terrifying. Exciting things are in the works for  2014, and I hope you'll continue to come back. I added a feature in the upper right hand corner (right above the "Blogs That I Love" section) where you can enter your email address and subscribe to this blog, so each time I publish a new post, you'll receive it in e-mail form. And please do say hello in the comments below! I'm so eager to learn who you are and what you'd like to see more of here!
